ANNOUNCEMENT! INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

LIENIP NewsIn the bounds of the II International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples interregional public organization “L’auravetl’an Information and Education Network of Indigenous peoples” (Gorno-Altaisk) organizes and holds the international seminar “Traditional Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples: Issues of Preservation and Legal Protection” in Moscow on 22-23 October, 2009.
The seminar participants will get acquainted with measures and existing systems of special protection of indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge in international legislation and they will discuss remedies in the Russian legislation too.

Representatives of the public authority of the Russian Federation, international organizations, scientific communities and organizations of indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East will take part in the seminar.
Actuality of the event is conditioned by the fact that today traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples in the Russian Federation is not considered to be an intellectual property and it belongs to the category of collective rights that are preterlegal because of complexity of mechanism design and definition of objects and subjects of law. Although they tend to use this knowledge in economical, economic and scientific activities. Organizations that use traditional knowledge often patent it as their own invention. And with it indigenous peoples who are historically authors of various methods of traditional economy, cure and folklore do not win the due recognition and respect never mind the reward for the use of their traditional knowledge.
State recognition of the value of indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge will help to strengthen cultural peculiarity and extend their application in social and production spheres such as sustainable agriculture, available public health and preservation of biodiversity.
The seminar is held in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (Geneva) and with the assistance of the Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation.
Representatives of indigenous communities from no less than 18 subjects of the Russian Federation are expected to take part in the event.
