Льыоравэтльан - On 16-18 May an educational training seminar "Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Legislation in the Russian Federation" was held in

The seminar was organized by Autonomous Noncommercial Organization "Lawyers for Constitutional Rights and Liberties" (Moscow) and Altai Regional Public Organization of the Kumandin People "Istok". 35 people participated in the seminar work, among them representatives of indigenous peoples of the Altai Territory, leaders of Altai public organizations, representatives of Ongudai, Kosh-Agach, Ulagan regions administrations.

On the seminar there was analysed the active legislation guaranteeing indigenous peoples' rights of traditional life and original environment, as well as there were shown tendencies of changing the natural resources legislation from the aspect of implementation the RF citizens and indigenous peoples' rights of land and natural resources. Special attention was paid to the conformity between the standards of Russian legislation and international legislation protecting rights of indigenous peoples, that is the International Labour Organization Convention 169 on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples.
The participants listened to the lectures of Mikhail Brinchuk, Doctor of Law, Professor of the Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Ecological and Legal Research Centre; Olga Yakovleva, member of Moscow Regional College of Barristers, Honourary Barrister of Russia; Ivan Iutin, post-graduate student of the Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and other lecturers.
The result of the seminar is, first of all, the knowledge of our rights and ways to protect them, the desire to share the knowledge with the fellow-countrymen and together to obtain recognition of our interests. Moreover, there was made a decision to collect signs under the appeals to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, to the Government of the Russian Federation and to the State Duma with the demands to secure in the Forest Code of the Russian Federation the primary right of indigenous peoples' representatives and communities to assign to them forest plots with the aim to lead there traditional life; to secure in the Forest Code of RF mechanisms allowing to create territories of traditional use of nature and with other demands connected with the acceptance of the Forest Code.
