XIV Session of Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore

XIV session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (the Committee) of the World Intellectual Property Organization took place on 29 June – 03 July in Geneva.
The discussion focused on African Group’s proposal for renewal of the IGC’s mandate. In particular the proposal included the following issues:
• The IGC will carry on the work on genetic resources, traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions in the period from 2010 to 2011;
• The Committee’s work should be negotiations-based, strictly scheduled and include inter-session work;
• By the end of 2011 the Committee should work up legally binding instrument/instruments of traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and genetic resources and submit it/them to the WIPO General Assembly.
Indigenous Peoples’ Forum consisting of indigenous representatives from different countries in whole entertained the African Group’s proposal on condition that they take valuable and equal part in it including inter-session work. Gulvayra Shermatova and Tatyana Kalyantagrau represented LIENIP during the work of the XIV session of the IGC.
