V World Congress of Finno-Ugric peoples finished in Khanty-Mansiysk on 30 June. More than 300 delegates from nearly ten countries and many districts of Russia, nearly 350 observers, guests, and journalists took part in it. Guests of honour were Presidents of Russian Federation, Hungary, Finland, Estonia, famous Russian politicians, leaders of State Duma committees and Council of Federation, ministers.
Congress participants said it is necessary to take measures with respect to Finno-Ugric peoples in the field of human rights, culture, demography, public health, ecology, mass media, and information systems.
They particularly adopted a petition to the CE Commissioner for Human Rights for establishment of permanent forum on issues of indigenous peoples and national minorities of Europe.
Congress participants presented Government an offer to renew annual statistics of socio-economic and demographic indicators of depopulated peoples and ethnic groups.
Congress once again called Hungary, Russian Federation, Finland, Estonia, and other countries where Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic peoples traditionally live to ratify ILO Convention concerning Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent Countries.
Plenary sittings where International Finno-Ugric Consultative Committee reported and Resolution was adopted, round-table conferences, discussions of ethnopolicy, law, health, demography, language, education, presentations of books, and various cultural events were held in the bounds of the congress.
