| Seminar ''Traditional Indigenous Knowledge'' as a side event of UNPFII |
On 21 May in the UN Headquarters in New York there was held a seminar “Traditional Indigenous Knowledge” as a side event
of the 6th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, organized by LIENIP in celebration of World
Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, co-sponsored by University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA)
UCLA Center for Information as Evidence, with support of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United
Nations.
The program of the seminar included the following items:
- Preservation of Traditional Indigenous Knowledge and multiple perspectives of the issue;
- Research and ethics of collaboration with indigenous communities;
- Dialogue on advancement of political and ethical guidelines related to the problem of safeguarding Traditional
Indigenous cultures.
The seminar was opened by Gulvaira Shermatova, LIENIP President. During the seminar there were presented statements by
Ulia Gosart – Udmurt indigenous people, Russian Federation, LIENIP, Mattias Ahren – Saami indigenous people, Saami
Council, Sweden, Dr. Anne Gilliland – University of California in Los Angeles, USA, Ramis Alakbarov – United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA), Rama Rao – World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). The presented information caused high
interest of the audience which was proved by lots of questions addressed to the presenters.
Such a seminar is the first for LIENIP at this level. It was attended by an expert of the UNPFII from Russia Yury
Boitchenko, representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affaires Alexey Akzhigitov, representative of the Ministry of
Regional Development Alexey Zenko, as well as indigenous participants of the UNPFII from different parts of the world.
